Step 5:With your store credit you can now shop till you drop, or we can start creating a custom design for you.FAQ:Can you just melt my gold and make something out of it? Why must it be refined? We stand by the quality of the work we do. If we use your gold without refining it all of the impurities (metals added to the gold to make it more durable and/or white, rose or green) get melted right along with it. Some alloys don't work well together and end up breaking down and tarnishing to an ugly dark brown, even cracking and falling apart after a few years. So we always send your gold to our refiners who clean the gold of all impurities and give us clean fresh alloyed gold in return. What are assay and refining fees? Why is it 25% for those fees? Our refiners test and refine gold to exact standards. With their testing Assay) we will know what the content of your gold is with out a doubt. The also charge us for refining your gold. The two combined charges are often more than that 25% but we are willing to "eat" some of the cost to make you orders possible. How long do I have to use my credit? Your credit must be used within 12 months of refining. If you have credit remaining after your purchase(s) you may request a Gift Certificate (which would be vaild for upto 12 months after issuance). You have informed me that some of my stones are synthetic. How do you know? Synthetic gemstones especially sapphire, emerald and rubies have been in use for hundreds of years. Pre-1902 it was common to use colored foil on the back of clear quartz or glass to mimic colored gems these are called "paste" gems. After 1902 the Verneuil process made synthetic gems affordable and a pretty alternative for rare and costly gems. Many art deco pieces were made with real diamonds surrounded by syntheic sapphires, rubies or emeralds to keep the cost down. You can read articles regarding this here: http://www.pricescope.com/forum/colored-stones/http://reviews.ebay.com/Art-Deco-Jewelry-Circa-1919-1935/http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verneuil_process We have a full gemstone testing lab at our disposal. If you would like a second opinion for $50 we can take your stones to a local gem appraiser to get a report on your stone. Or you'd like you can have the stones appraised before you send the jewelry to us. ***Please note, that unless the stone is removed from the setting a full gem analysis is impossible! The gem must be removed to test it's specific gravity, refraction index and actual (exact, not calculated probability) weight. If you are told otherwise you need to find a new appraiser. A Certified Jewelry Appraiser is not a Gemologist. There are some appraisers that have had the extra education to become a gemologist.
